Quick Build: Shop Light Diffuser
June 20, 2024
I bought some cheap LED bar lights to brighten up my shop a bit, but they hurt my eyes looking directly at them. I played around with a couple of designs for a wood panel to diffuse the light, including an experiment using plywood with lots of small holes in it, but I couldn't quite get an effect I was happy with. Eventually I got fed up and decided to just wrap paper around it. I had some 8.5x11" heavy weight paper on hand, so I quickly modeled up a bracket to hold the paper around the light fixture.
The light fixture is mounted to a horizontal 2x4 in my garage, so the bracket just press fits around the board. I made 5 brackets and glued paper to them, then lined them up on the light fixture.
I'm pretty pleased with the result here. Less than an hour all in (not including the exploration time on other designs), and very functional. Gluing up the paper to the wood was fun, and I want to play around with more glued paper/wood projects in the future.
